Overview

🧶 Volunteer Opportunity: Crochet and Donate Octopus Toys for Premature Babies

Crocheting an octopus for a premature baby is a beautiful, gentle way to make a meaningful impact. These soft, handmade comfort toys are used in neonatal units to help soothe premature infants — and you can create one from home by following the pattern available on the Volunteer Now blog.

🐙 Why Octopus Toys Help Premature Babies

Research and neonatal feedback show that crocheted octopus toys can be incredibly soothing for preemies because:

  • The curly tentacles mimic an umbilical cord, reminding babies of the womb.
  • Babies often instinctively hold onto the tentacles, which helps
prevent them from pulling at their medical tubes and wires, improving safety.
  • The softness and small size make them ideal comfort items for neonatal units.
  • They provide a sense of security, comfort, and calm, which supports better sleep and stabilisation.

These toys must be made to specific standards to ensure they are safe and appropriate for hospital use.
