Ice Skating with Bet on Better

Skates, Smiles & a Whole Lot of Heart: 200 Volunteers Hit the Ice for a Cause! โ›ธ๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

What do you get when you mix 200 enthusiastic volunteers, a slippery ice rink, and a mountain of non-perishable food donations? You get a volunteering event like no other โ€” full of fun, friendship, and a few graceful (and not-so-graceful) tumbles!

In a joyful partnership between Volunteer Now, Bet on Better, and Kindness Like Confetti, we hosted an unforgettable Volunteer Ice Skating Event โ€” and wow, what a day! Held at the Northgate Ice Rink, the event brought together volunteers from schools and communities across Gauteng, united by one goal: to give back while gliding forward.

A Little Falling, a Lot of Laughing

From the moment the skates hit the ice, it was clear โ€” this wasnโ€™t going to be a strictly athletic affair. There were wobbly knees, dramatic spins (some accidental), and enough laughter to melt even the iciest corners of the rink.

Some volunteers hugged the barrier like an old friend. Others zoomed by like pros, showing off (we see you, backflipper-in-hoodie!). But no matter the skill level, everyone embraced the chaos, the camaraderie, and the occasional clumsy fall.

As one teen volunteer said through giggles after a particularly theatrical flop: โ€œAt least I fell for a good cause!โ€

Giving with Heart (and Groceries)

But this was more than just a fun day out. Every volunteer brought non-perishable food items to support local hunger relief initiatives โ€” and together, we collected over 300kgs of food for families in need. Thatโ€™s the power of skating with purpose!

Whether it was canned beans, mealie meal, pasta, or peanut butter, each item represented kindness in action โ€” proof that small contributions, when multiplied by many, make a huge impact.

A Meeting of Hearts and Communities

Perhaps the most magical part of the day? Watching young people from different schools, suburbs, and backgrounds meeting, chatting, and cheering each other on โ€” some for the first time ever.

Strangers became teammates. Falls turned into friendships. It was the true spirit of volunteering: connection, joy, and shared purpose.

A big thank you to our partners Bet on Better and Kindness Like Confetti for helping turn a chilly afternoon into a warm-hearted celebration of community.
