Volunteering with Purpose: Making a Difference at CMI in 2022
In 2022, a group of passionate young volunteers came together at CMI (Centre for Management Innovation) for a heartwarming day of service that left a lasting impact on both people and communities in need. The event brought together learners, educators, and volunteers with one goal: to give back in meaningful, hands-on ways. Through a combination of creativity, empathy, and teamwork, the group supported two incredible causes—Dignity Dreams and Hotel of Hope.
The first part of the day was dedicated to making menstrual health bracelets for Dignity Dreams, a non-profit organisation that manufactures and distributes washable sanitary pads to disadvantaged girls across South Africa. The bracelets, made from coloured beads, represent the menstrual cycle and serve as educational tools to help young girls better understand their bodies and menstrual health.
With beads, thread, and concentration in hand, volunteers carefully assembled each bracelet, learning about the menstrual cycle and the challenges many girls face when they don’t have access to proper sanitary products. These bracelets are used by Dignity Dreams facilitators during educational workshops to explain menstruation in a way that is accessible, respectful, and empowering. The project not only allowed volunteers to use their creativity but also raised their awareness about period poverty—a topic that is often overlooked and under-discussed.
After a short break and some well-earned snacks, the volunteers turned their attention to another meaningful cause: Hotel of Hope, a children’s home that provides safety, care, and hope to vulnerable and orphaned children. As part of the project, participants brought along books to donate to the children’s library. From colourful picture books to classic novels, the donations rolled in—each one representing a story that would bring joy, comfort, and inspiration to a child.
But the work didn’t stop at donations. Volunteers also helped sort, organise, and shelve the books, creating a warm, inviting reading space for the children at Hotel of Hope. Books were arranged by age and theme, ensuring that the children would easily be able to find stories that matched their interests and reading levels. It was more than just tidying a shelf—it was building a space where imagination, learning, and curiosity could flourish.
Throughout the day, the energy at CMI was uplifting. Volunteers were not only gaining service hours for school but were also discovering the joy of making a tangible difference. The event was a powerful reminder that every contribution—whether it’s stringing beads or sorting books—can change lives when done with heart.
