Volunteer Opportunity: Help Young Learners Count with Pegs & Counters!
Description:
Learning at a young age is both visual and tactile! Create colorful, hands-on counting sets to help young learners grasp basic math concepts. This fun and creative project is perfect for volunteers of all ages.
What You’ll Need:
- 55 wooden craft pegs (or small washing pegs)
- Acrylic paint in 10 different colors (you can mix your own)
- A set of matching-colored markers
- A small paintbrush
- 1 large sheet of white board (to make your counters)
- Cardboard (for backing boards)
- Self-adhesive clear book covering plastic
- A pair of scissors
- A glue stick
How to Make Your Counting Set:
- Use a round object (like the top of a deodorant can, egg cup, or cookie cutter) to trace circles for your counters.
- Write numbers in the middle of each circle and color each number differently.
- Cut out the circles and stick them onto cardboard for durability.
- Cover the counters with self-adhesive plastic to protect them, then carefully cut them out again.
- Ensure all edges are glued down properly.
- Create extra counters with +, –, and = symbols.
- Paint the pegs to match the number colors (e.g., if “2” is yellow, paint two pegs yellow).
- Once dry, attach the pegs to the counters and place everything in a Ziplock bag.
