
We are seeking nature-loving volunteers to help gather fresh, wild-grown food for tortoises currently residing at local veterinary clinics and wildlife sanctuaries. Providing the correct diet is crucial for these reptiles’ health and recovery. This is a great outdoor opportunity to learn about safe foraging and directly contribute to animal welfare!
Your task is to safely identify and collect a large volume of appropriate, pesticide-free tortoise food from the list below.
Important Note: Ensure all collected food is free from pesticides, pollutants, and car exhaust fumes. Do not collect from areas near busy roads.
Tortoises require a high-fiber, low-protein, and low-sugar diet primarily consisting of weeds and edible wild plants.
đźš« Foods to AVOID (Do NOT Collect): Iceberg lettuce, spinach, cabbage, fruit (except tiny amounts as a rare treat), peas, beans, or any food not listed above.
The amount of food equivalent to one service hour is defined as a significant, easily transportable volume.
1 full, standard black bin bag (or equivalent large container) of appropriate tortoise food = 1 Service Hour
All collected food will be donated directly to participating tortoise sanctuaries or specialist reptile veterinary clinics.
