The President’s Award

The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment in South Africa, affiliated with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, offers three progressive levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each level has specific age requirements, minimum completion periods, and activity commitments across four sections: Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. The Gold level includes an additional Residential Project.

Age Requirements and Completion Periods:

  • Bronze: Ages 14 to 24; minimum completion period of 6 months.
  • Silver: Ages 15 to 24; 6 months for Bronze Award holders, 12 months for direct entrants.
  • Gold: Ages 16 to 24; 12 months for Silver Award holders, 18 months for direct entrants.

Activity Requirements:

  • Service:
    • Bronze: 24 hours over 3 months.
    • Silver: 48 hours over 6 months.
    • Gold: 72 hours over 12 months.

  • Skills and Physical Recreation:
    • Bronze: 1 hour per week for 3 months in each section.
    • Silver: 1 hour per week for 6 months in each section.
    • Gold: 1 hour per week for 12 months in each section.
  • Adventurous Journey:
    • Bronze: 2 days and 1 night; covering 24 km.
    • Silver: 3 days and 2 nights; covering 48 km.
    • Gold: 4 days and 3 nights; covering 80 km.

Residential Project (Gold Level Only): A shared purposeful activity with unfamiliar people in a residential setting for 5 days and 4 nights.
